1965-67: With The Marines in I Corps

Drawing fire.  This little O-1E "Birddog" of the Marines' VMO-6 draws fire by flying close to the mountain while another O-1E spots the fire and calls in an air strike. The old bridge in Vietnam's northern I Corps was destroyed during the French war.  

 A pair of 2.75-inch ockets from a Marine "Huey" helicopter spiral toward Viet Cong guerrillas attacking an outpost in the Northern Provinces. Marines on the high ground above Qui Nhon stand guard as a Marine H-34 helicopter departs. Marine 'Yankee-Papa ' helicopter hauls wounded ARVN soldiers.

A VC suspect waits with his two children for Marines to check out his story. Water torture is a frequent interrogation tool used by Marines and ARVN soldiers. Marine Captain Lawrence, CO of G Co. 2nd Bn. 9th Marines, is skeptical of this man's story.  He was dug out of a hiding hole last night after exploding a grenade that killed his colleagues.  

Lt. Blount, a platoon leader in G-2-9, reacts to a grenade thrown by a VC. An old villager points out a VC hideout. Young Marine sniper celebrates his third kill of the day with a cigar.   

"Refuse to fight, pass over to the liberation army's side, you'll be warmly welcomed and sent back to the USA!"  (Yeah, right) "Death is following you every step you take in the path of war!
